The absolute contradiction in Brexit thinking - we can do deals with the EU where we want, but not where we don't want, diverge where we want, not where we don't. Reality - future UK policy debate will be dominated by whether to follow EU rules or not 
Business will want to follow many or all EU rules to be able to sell most effectively to the large nearby market. They would push for similar in UK (check California Effect). Will mean huge debates over even quite minor rule changes.
Meanwhile the UK governments of the day will spend increasing resources trying to influence said Brussels rules, realising that we will need to do this to ensure our businesses CAN sell to the EU market. (and buy from it)
Other markets are important, but I tend to do my shopping in London rather than Edinburgh. The gravity effect still holds - doesn't mean UK business shouldn't seek business elsewhere, but nearer is easier / end of inadvertent thread
