"Typhoons launched .. on August 21 when two suspected Russian Su-30 Flanker aircraft appeared to be heading toward NATO airspace from the Crimea region."

The thin purple line over water is the limit of any country's airspace airspace
My ugly blue line represents NATO.
It is 300km-500km from Crimea to "NATO Airspace". My math is probably wrong, but isn't that a 10 minute flight if they break the sound barrier? If it took them longer than that, they weren't attacking. If they weren't expected to enter NATO airspace; why bother?
Seriously, were the NATO members' Patriot missile battery operators on strike? Was there EW being aimed at the radars of NATO nations suggesting an imminent surgical strike by the two fast movers?

Okay okay, you can never be too careful, but tell the whole boring story.
"We had radar contact and shadowed the two aircraft as they flew through the Romanian Flight Information Region, but we never got within visual range to see them"

The blue line is the FIR boundary
So the unarmed Russian jets were in international airspace, somewhere between 12 nautical miles and the edge of Romania's FIR (say ~100km.) They were never seen by the pilots, and they were only detected on radar.
This would suggest they were well beyond 12nm, closer to 100km
Would it be so hard to publish geography-related press releases with a map-infographic? Doesn't that make it universally easier to see and be understood by everyone?
