We don’t know much about whether education-based interventions can reduce recidivism (for those who already have a criminal record). However, there is a long literature on the effects of education on crime more broadly.

Punchline: education is a very effective way to prevent crime.

Caveat: gathering young people in one place (for school or anything else) can unintentionally increase criminal behavior.

High incarceration rates in the U.S. affect not only the individuals incarcerated, but their families and communities. Quantifying that effect is challenging, but important for cost-benefit analyses of incarceration policies.

There is a long literature showing that incarceration reduces crime rates (primarily through an incapacitation effect), but it may have unintended negative impacts on those closest to the person incarcerated.
The incarceration of a parent could hurt kids by removing a source of emotional support & reducing HH income. On the other hand, removing parents who are engaged in criminal activity could be beneficial for children if those parents created instability or were poor role models.

Long Thread🤷‍♂️1) There is no one way in education. Of that, I am certain. For 23 years I have been looking for it, but in my search, all that I have found is a way, which becomes my way, until I find a better way, which then steps aside for the next way. There is no WAY.
2) Today, we see more ways than ever because of the work we share, ranging from the conventional to the crazy. And platforms like Twitter have revealed this in ways unthought of when I began my career in the fall of ‘96. Then, “ways” were found in books and PD pushed and
3) proffered by those with generally little time in the actual classroom, and we generally (sometimes reluctantly) settled for that because our options and worlds were small, and we had not the communities we do today. The eduTwitterverse and other ed communities did not exist.

***Q1: What are the patterns of #gunviolence injury and death in the US? ***

A: 100 people die and 200 are injured each day across the US. Most deaths (~2/3) are suicide; these are mostly white middle-aged men from rural areas.
Approximately 30% are homicides: mostly young minority men from inner cities. The rest are accidental and mass shootings.

#DomesticViolence deaths from firearm injury are estimated at ~50/month.

And firearm injury is the 2nd leading cause of death for American youth.

based on the events of my morning so far i'm going to remind you that telling office workers to just walk out at 5:00 PM on the dot and never stay a minute after or do anything off the clock is asinine advice because our stressors are magnetic and they follow us
any job where you work in an office, people get your name and email address and they blame you. both your management and customers are constantly naming you when things go wrong, building up a list of reasons to fire you.
"just walk out 😎don't give them a minute of your time for free😍" ok I'll just ignore this angry email on Saturday and-- ah, here we are on Monday and I now have to get on a call with 9 executives. Cool. That was worth it. Thanks, person who doesn't know what I do. Great advice.

Know what people don't realize? The consequences that come with labeling someone, something they're not. Even if #Kavanaugh is proven innocent, the label itself will stick with him the rest of his life.

When I was 12. Maybe 13. I had one good friend that I hung out with. Day In and Day Out. We were inseparable. He stayed with me, I stayed with him. For some reason, even though he was the one who was considered the "bad kid", his parents never really liked me.....cont.
He got in trouble at a young age and was sent away. To where, I've never known. His little brother, a couple years younger, used to get bullied all the time. While my friend was away, I stuck around and protected the little brother. Even stayed and hung out a couple times...cont.
