Lots of comparisons between Trump and Nixon. Many differences. Not least this: the American party system has transformed. Nixon knew the game was up in July 1974 when Republican Congressional leaders told him they would personally vote for impeachment. Hard to imagine that today.
It is true though that like Trump's, Nixon's administration had begun to denude him of power as Watergate reached its climax. E.g. Sec of Defense briefing army not to take direct orders from Nixon (unbelievably there were fears he might use army to barricade himself in the WH)
BUT big difference: this wasn't about Nixon's fitness for office per se, but rather a recognition that his political and moral authority was completely depleted. Concerns about Trump are more fundamental- that he is (and always was) intrinsically unable to be president.
