My theory:

DoJ officials intended to defy Trump & redact docs related to the Russia investigation that Trump ordered to be released. Today, on Twitter, Trump backed away from his demand to declassify the docs.

The Rosenstein story is leaking now to give Trump reason to fire him
This explains why Trump Jr is tweeting to give the Rosenstein story credence. Normally, he and his father bash the NYT and paint unfavorable stories as "fake news." But, here, he's giving credence to the story & manufacturing outrage.

Pretty transparent.
Other people are noticing this plot, too.

You know, the Trumps aren't that intelligent. Their agendas are easy to discern.

Told Comey to "let Flynn go." Fired Comey & went on national tv to admit that it was over the Russia investigation. Went on Twitter to attack investigators. Fired McCabe. Attacked Sessions for recusing & eventually pushed him out. Installed attacker of the investigation as AG.
Whitaker won't recuse like Sessions did, despite obvious appearance of conflict of interest.
