/THREAD: What we learned from #FO256 from over 100 Family Offices regarding crypto. Close to 50% polled place crypto in pre-existing allocation buckets which in my opinion affect everything from diligence, valuation and financial projections.
/What we learned from #FO256: as viewed a majority who attended have already made an allocation to crypto, most likely to GP’s, however 20% are still on the sidelines. Of those on the sidelines ~10% are closer to making an allocation in the next 6-12 months.
/What we learned from #FO256: a majority (41%) made their first non-BTC/non-ETH investment ONLY in the past year. To me this shows we are very early in investment adoption among FO/HNW investors; more experience & education will affect the J-curve of such adoption.
/What we learned from #FO256: the attendees submitted questions/concerns about the asset class; many surrounding valuation, reporting of performance, regulation and counterparty risks. Below are the top 10 questions submitted.
/What we learned from #FO256: conclusion - the overall appetite for knowledge on the asset class & this summit was beyond any assumptions; over 400 people registered, over 120 family offices confirmed. Most trying to figure how to “work” with the asset:
/Conclusions (cont.) from #FO256: the majority have had only recent experience w/the asset (last 6-12 months) & are placing it in pre-existing buckets; may cause issues with diligence, valuation and overall expectations. In the next 6-12 months 20% may look to enter the asset.
/Conclusion (cont.) from #FO256: more open and honest education & dialogue needed; honesty about issues and where “we are” in the maturation curve is vital. There are approx 10,000 FO’s worldwide overseeing ~$7-10T; less fees, more long-term relationship building needed.
/Last note re #FO256: I decided last night to make these findings open source to help the crypto community. There are elements not in this TS but a majority of the findings are.
