Some important LDF news that flew under the radar during “Kavanaugh week”: 1/
Disappointing news: SCOTUS denied cert (won’t review)in our case challenging qualified immunity for police ofcrs in Phenix City, AL who tased our client to death (13 times after he was on the ground). Devastating. You can read our petition here naacpldf.org/files/our-work… 2/
We received permission to participate at trial representing a diverse group of Harvard students and alums, in the Harvard affirmative action case. Our team is working hard in preparation. 4/
We filed a cert petition in Chamberlin v Fisher asking the SCOTUS to review a case involving racial discrimination in jury selection in a death penalty case. 5/
We filed an amicus brief in the SCOTUS in Chandler v Mississippi, a case involving the circumstances in which a juvenile can be sentenced to life in prison w/o parole. 6/
We are still monitoring the policing consent decree in Baltimore. Last week we submitted a comment letter on revised policies of the Baltimore Police Dept., focusing particular attention on investigation of rape and sexual assault. Read it here naacpldf.org/files/our-work… 7/
We sent a letter to the FL Dept of Education warning them that a number of private schools receiving federal funds may impose racially discriminatory dress codes on students. 8/
I started last week participating in a provocative & impt conversation abt narratives supporting criminal justice reform w @GroverNorquist & @weldon_angelos hosted by the @MarshallProj You can watch it here:
I say all this to say, we are doing extraordinary work at @NAACP_LDF. There is no finer legal org focused on racial justice. What you see is only part of the story. I don’t ask often, but I’m asking now: support us. We are small, but mighty. Join us. org2.salsalabs.com/o/6857/p/salsa 10/
