I want to share a brief story of a person, now 53 (same age as Justice #Kavanaugh) who was convicted of a sex crime at age 14 for conduct not dissimilar to that of which Kavanaugh is accused.
They have to register as a sex offender for life. They have never been convicted of another sex crime. They happen to be on parole now for a completely different offense (being in jail as a child can mess you up).
When you are on parole & a registered sex offender, that adds a whole bunch of extra requirements, especially if the complainant was under 18. Remember the person here was 14, & the complainant was under 18. This is the case, even where the sex offense was literally 40 years ago.
The person who committed the sex offense was a child - 14 compared to #Kavanaugh's 17, who people seem so willing to forgive. Parole also have very wide discretion to add whatever conditions to the terms of your supervision they see fit.
In this case, the person, who has no history of addiction or alcohol abuse, is not allowed to drink alcohol. So it would be too bad for #BrettKavanaugh who loves beer & thinks that is such an innocent thing to do. Parole says no beer. No alcohol of any kind, or back to prison.
Parole also says there are restrictions on where they can live - not within 1000 feet of a school. Now this only applies b/c they are on parole for a wholly different offense & a sex offender, It wouldn't apply just b/c they are a sex offender for a crime when they were 14.
In this case, it means the person cannot live with his family & 17 year old son, so he is forced to live in the one shelter on Wards Island (near Rikers Island) where sex offenders are able to live.
There are a whole bunch of other requirements, but the strangest - he is not allowed to play Pokemon. Parole literally won't let him play Pokemon or he can be sent back to prison.
I say all of this to say, when #BrettKavanaugh rails about how his life has been destroyed by allegations, he should consider how his life might have been destroyed if he had been prosecuted.
I don't know why but I just keep thinking how in his world it would be such a travesty for him to not be able to drink beer. And how he would still drink beer and never be caught.
In the world of the person living on Wards Island, where the police conduct regular "sweeps," he would be arrested for possession of an open container, violated for the arrest & drinking alcohol & sent back to prison.
Life is unfair, Brett, just not in the way you think.
