The Department of Justice has been taking action to curb the #OpioidEpidemic. Here are some of the steps we’ve taken:
More than 3,000 defendants have been charged with trafficking in heroin, fentanyl, or prescription drugs in FY 2017. #EndOpioidAbuse
Executed the largest-ever #healthcarefraud enforcement action, charging more than 600 defendants in 58 federal districts, including 162 doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals for opioid and narcotics-related crimes. #EndOpioidAbuse
DOJ launched Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), a surge in enforcement efforts in ten counties with some of the highest drug overdose death rates. #EndOpioidAbuse
Proposed rules, consistent with President Trump’s “Safe Prescribing Plan,” requiring a significant reduction—an average of 10% in 2019—in the manufacturing quotas for the six most frequently misused opioids. #EndOpioidAbuse
DOJ awarded nearly $320 million to combat the #opioidcrisis in October 2018 to support treatment, prevention, and interdiction efforts across the country. #EndOpioidAbuse
All variants of fentanyl have been scheduled to prevent illicit drug labs from circumventing the law. #EndOpioidAbuse
Targeted illicit fentanyl traffickers based in China, including opening a new DEA office in Guangzhou, and announcing the first-ever indictments of Chinese nationals for fentanyl trafficking in the United States. #EndOpioidAbuse @DEAHQ
Expanded @DEAHQ’s Drug Take Back Days, which have collected and destroyed 1,381 tons (2.7 million pounds) of unused, unwanted, and expired prescription drugs since April 2017. #EndOpioidAbuse #TakeBackDay
Revitalized #ProjectSafeNeighborhoods, focusing resources on taking down the worst criminals and gangs and dismantling the drug trafficking networks in our cities. #EndOpioidAbuse
DOJ created new task forces and units to fight illicit online opioid trafficking, target opioid-related #healthcarefraud, hold opioid manufacturers accountable for unlawful practices, and eradicate transnational organized crime threats. #EndOpioidAbuse
