Trump is doing a campaign rally in Murphysboro, Illinois. Tweets in this thread. Mute if this is too much Trump for one afternoon.
Here's my guide to the 23 lies and other false claims Trump has uttered most frequently at 2018 campaign rallies. thestar.com/news/world/ana…
Trump begins: "This was a rough, rough day for all of us. You know that."
Trump addresses the shooting again. "The hearts of all Americans are filled with grief following the monstrous killing of Jewish-Americans," he says. "It's horrible."
Trump: "This evil antisemitic attack is an assault on all of us. It's an assault on humanity. It will require all of us working together to extract the hateful poison of antisemitism from our world. This was an antisemitic attack at its worst."
Trump: Antisemitism can't be ignored, tolerated or allowed to continue; must be "confronted and condemned" everywhere it exists. He notes that Jews have faced persecution for many years; he adds: "You know that. You've all read it. We've studied it. They've gone through a lot."
On his fourth comment of the day on the shooting, Trump is delivering conventional words of condemnation and solidarity.
Trump: "This is our most important midterm election perhaps ever."
Trump, again trying to justify holding the rally, repeats his lie that the NYSE opened "the following day" after 9/11. He says we can't allow "sick" and "demented" people to determine how we live our lives.
"Remember the New York Stock Exchange," Trump repeats. The NYSE was closed until six days after 9/11. He's asking people to remember something that didn't happen.
Trump on the shooting and the rally: "We have our lives. We have our schedules. And nobody's going to change it. So we're here. And let's have a good time. And if you don't mind: I'm going to tone it down just a little bit." Many in the crowd yell: "Noooo."
Sir Alert and Tears Alert: "Steelworkers...Big, strong guys they came up to me. One of them said 'thank you sir for saving our country.' And he was crying. And I'm tellin' you, he was crying. I don't think this guy cried when he was a baby. This guy never cried."
Trump complains of a "no-border theory" among Democrats. Democrats do not want to abolish America's borders.
Trump re-promises his imaginary 10% tax cut.
Trump's speech said steel jobs had "vanished," but he said "vanquished" by accident. As usual, he refuses to admit he misspoke, saying, "You can say 'vanquished' and 'vanished.' It's a combination of both."
Trump says his 42-point victory in West Virginia is especially impressive because he beat a Democrat and not an independent. He names the Democrat, Hillary Clinton, and there was a Lock Her Up chant.
Trump is telling his usual tale about how he offered coal miners the possibility of working in tech, but they said no, they wanna dig coal. This time he added that he suggested taking the miners to Silicon Valley.
Trump is touting his steel and aluminum tariffs. He told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that they do not exist.
Trump is holding this rally, in theory, for congressman Mike Bost. He says that when Bost invited him to come to a US Steel furnace-reopening in the district -- "Sir could you come" -- he responded, "Who is this guy?"
Trump, with a new phrase, says this election is a choice between "resistance and results."
Trump says he is very careful about making sure he does not fall down on stairs and narrow passageways.
He said there was some narrow runway at the venue, then said if he fell down it'd be bad because it'd be big headline news, then explained that he is therefore quite careful about walking and such.
Trump asks people to stop and think about whether they can even believe that Democrats are in favour of "open borders." They are not in favour of open borders.
Trump is again mocking politicians who urged him to make a quick deal with Canada ("pleeeease"). "You can't just run and make it. Canada's had an unbelievable deal. Canada, we love Canada. We love Canada. I actually like the prime minister. I do. Good guy."
Trump on the acrimonious negotiation with Mexico and Canada: "We all lived happily ever after."
Trump: "No caravans. We don't want caravans. We're not having caravans." There is a Build That Wall chant.
Trump tells his most frequent rally lie, saying that he has started The Wall (no) and that he has secured $4.8 billion for it (he got $1.6 billion for non-Wall border security projects this year, maybe getting $1.6 billion for next year).
Trump on the border: "You're going to be so happy next week. You're going to see something happen next week, you're going to be very happy. You're going to be very happy. And you know the military is going to the border."
Trump on the caravan: "If you look at that large group, sometimes it gets up to 17,000 people, they say. Today they said it's really gets bigger and bigger." I've seen an estimate of 7,000 this week, and read that it's shrinking; is there any basis for Trump's claim?
Trump lies that China has been "averaging $500 billion for many years" in trade surpluses. It has never once had a $500 billion surplus. This is the Trump lie I am most bored of noting.
"There's no more nuclear," Trump says of North Korea, specifically talking about nuclear testing but phrasing this with some skilful ambiguity.
Trump goes Real Estate Guy about North Korea: "That location's so good. Between China, Russia and South Korea. What a location. It's gonna be fantastic."
We're on the part where Trump complains about critics of his handling of North Korea and claims he avoided a war that was a "potential nuclear catastrophe."
Trump says he really admired the "serious" wall in the DMZ between North and South Korea. He explains, "A fence with a lot of electric currents going through it...you take a look at that, you say, 'I'm passing.'"
Trump mocks critics he says wanted him to "have a boxing match" with Putin in Helsinki. Then he adds, of this imaginary boxing match, that he "would have done just fine."
Trump: "This will be the election of the caravans, the Kavanaughs (sic), law and order, tax cuts, and you know what else? It's going to be the election of common sense."
Trump on, I think, Never Trump conservatives: "You have the haters and they continue to hate. These are foolish and very stupid people. Very stupid people. No, I see some of these guys, seriously..."
Yes, Trump is raging at Never Trump conservatives. He continues: "The losers that were...some guy named Kristol. Bill Kristol. He called it wrong from Day One."
Trump on Never Trump conservatives: "These are losers. Why do they put them on television?" "They're like fools." He says he has gotten these people everything they ever wanted, conservatism-wise, "And they still hate Donald Trump." He adds, "Fake."
Trump repeats his usual rally lie that California Democratic governor candidate Gavin Newsom wants "open borders" and so California is going to have a larger population than the US does now. Newsom does not want open borders. Doesn't even want to abolish ICE.
Trump on the caravan: "Some of those people are people that we don't want. I hate to say it. Some of those people are people we do not want. And some of those people I would love to have."
Trump making no sense at all about the Democratic Party: "As we speak, the Democrat - not the Democratic - the Democrat...their name is the Democrat Party. It sounds so much more beautiful, 'the Democratic Party'...they should probably change their name."
Trump lies: "The Democrat Party is openly encouraging millions of illegal aliens to break our laws, violate our borders and overwhelm our country."
"We have created almost half a million new manufacturing jobs," Trump says of the 378,000 manufacturing jobs added during his presidency, then lies that Obama said there'd be no more manufacturing jobs, which never happened.
Trump on Black people: "They're smart. They're smart people. And take a look at the polls: not automatic anymore" for the Democrats.
Trump with his usual Pocahontas rambling about Warren: "We can't use the name.,.I can't do it, she doesn't have any Indian blood. I have more than she does, and I have none...I can't call her Pocahontas anymore. But I think I will anyway."
Trump with his usual nonsense about how "Medicare for all" would "obliterate Medicare."
In the Marist poll this week, Trump had an 11% approval rating with African-Americans, 75% disapproval.
Trump lies as always that he got the Veterans Choice health program passed after "44 years" of non-passage. It was passed under Obama in 2014. Trump signed a law that modified the program.
Trump calls his support the greatest political movement in the history of the country, then says, "We have a lot of bad people out there trying to hurt us, but we're not going to let that happen."
Winning, winning, tired of winning, disgusted of winning, the president does not care, he will keep on winning, for you.
Trump: "Think of where you are now compared to where you were three or four or five years ago. It's like a different planet."
Trump says that Illinois was settled by tough and strong pioneer women, then, ad-libbing, says, "Beautiful women. I'm not allowed to say that." Calling people beautiful and complaining he's not allowed to call people beautiful is a new staple of his speeches.
Trump amps up his promise to keep winning and winning: "It will be total victory. You know it."
Trump has concluded.
