Where I'll be posting some of the random interesting things I've learned over the years playing this crazy game (Super Smash Bros Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube). Hope you discover something new, read citations for full details. RTs appreciated #ssbm

The formula that determines this is complicated, but roughly:
(DMG/60)*100 = % chance of drop
(where DMG=damage of the attack you are hit by)
You cannot drop an item if being hit with a cape attack, or if you're frozen.

If you use C-stick to aerial throw an item, you can recatch it as soon as the animation ends.
If you use A/Z to aerial throw an item, you need to wait 40f before recatching. Pressing A/Z early resets this timer, so don't mash.

Each of his costume colors has a SLIGHTLY different width to its Environment Collision Box, which the game uses to process some interactions (hit/hurtboxes are the same). Green is the widest, regular the thinnest.

If Marth uses certain moves while Whispy (the tree) is blinking, there is a small chance that the move won't work properly. Here is a video of it happening to @bobbyscar back in 2007:

If a spacie lasers a lot and then reflects a B move (pill, needle) with shine, that projectile will use the staleness of the spacie's laser. Similarly if you side+B a lot, it stales reflected missles/PKfires.

If you have less stocks than your opponent, the base grab hold time for your opponent is reduced from 75 to 60, making it easier for you to mash out.
[reddit.com/r/SSBM/comment…]
Breaking out of a grab doesn't normally give a frame advantage to either side, but:
If an enemy breaks out of Bowser's grab, he can act 10f before they can.
If DK breaks out while grounded, he can act 9f before the enemy can.

It's actually possible to fc an aerial that was input AFTER Peach has already left float!
To do this, input that aerial during the IASA frames of another attack that DID start while she was floating.
[smashboards.com/threads/discov…]
Peach can float for 150f or 2.5 seconds before you fall. However, you can float a bit longer by starting an attack just before float runs out. She will keep floating until after the attack ends.

You typically cannot act for 7f after grabbing the ledge.
Unless you are Link. His animation is shorter, so you only have to wait 3f.
Young Link still has to wait 7f.

In NTSC, DK loses his charged punch if he gets hit out of his up+B, but not in PAL. Samus loses her charge shot if hit out of her up+B in both NTSC/PAL. Sheik and Mewtwo don't lose their charges if hit out of up+B.

5 characters are weaker at throwing items than the rest of the cast, usually resulting in less damage. From @MVG_Mew2King 's test with a Home Run bat:
Pichu: ~3% less dmg than typical bat throw
Zelda/Puff/GW: ~2% "
Ganon: ~1% "

Some characters can slightly angle their normal up+B by inputting a different direction after activating it. This lets them trade horizontal movement for vertical distance (or visa-versa). A few that can use this: Marth, Peach, Dr/Mario
[smashboards.com/threads/marths…]
Works on Puff (sometimes Pichu/GW) at any % on certain stages as long as they don't cc or S/DI properly.
To do this, land a single-hit reverse-up-B. They can't get hit by any but the 1st hitbox. (Works due to high BKB, low weight)

By using Mewtwo's side+B at the ledge, you can drag an opponent under the stage to their death. The only legal stage you can do this on is BF, but it works on others.

Link and Young Link can both drop their bombs and then send them sliding across the ground, until they explode or fall off the stage. This seems to be easier with YL, use weak attacks so they don't explode.

Mario and Doc (maybe others?) can grab the ledge immediately after a dash attack. This is done by holding away from stage, then back toward the stage at a certain point in the attack animation.
