Democrats had big wins around the country last night, including on the redistricting front. We are in a far better position on redistricting than we were last time around. Here's the bottom line:
We won governor's races in 8 key redistricting states: Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia (in 2017).
We flipped 6 legislative chambers in key redistricting states: Colorado Senate, Maine Senate, Minnesota House, New Hampshire House and Senate, and the New York Senate.
We broke supermajorities in 4 key chambers, which puts a check on Republican majorities: North Carolina House and Senate, Michigan Senate and Pennsylvania Senate.
We made gains in 6 key legislative chambers: Pennsylvania House, Ohio House and Senate, Texas House and Senate, and Virginia House of Delegates (in 2017).
We won Supreme Court races in North Carolina (Anita Earls), Michigan (Megan Cavanagh) and Wisconsin (Rebecca Dallet earlier this year). These courts play a role in redistricting litigation.
All together, we've broken up Republican trifecta control in the gerrymandered states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Virginia, as well as Maine. We have officially shifted the balance of power away from Republicans, with another cycle (2020) to make even more gains.
Also, redistricting reform initiatives passed with huge margins in 4 key states: Colorado (70%), Michigan (61%), Missouri (60%) and Ohio (passed in April with 75%). Utah also seems likely to pass Prop 4. This gives us a fairer redistricting process in all of these states.
We at @DemRedistrict are thrilled to have worked with so many great candidates, committees and partners to make this progress on the redistricting front happen, and we have big plans to continue this momentum into the 2019 and 2020 elections.
