Sources confirm no longer a NI specific backstop in the Withdrawal Deal text.
was told a month ago by good EU source there would definitively and unarguably be NI only version of backstop in final text - now categorically told that’s not the case -a win of sorts for UK negotiating team and PM.
How substantive a win it is depends on how much the new single backstop simply integrates NI only solutions into a single package.

That depends on the detail obviously that we should get tomorrow.
Remember there are already some GB-NI checks on livestock - I visited them myself - these set to be expanded ....

EU sources say there will be “no summit” and there are “no actual talks”, some discussions on reassurances. Another diplomatic source tells me even those will not come before the vote next week. /1
Still not entirely sure whether the Meaningful Vote debate that resumes tomorrow will be the continuation of the one curtailed last month or a new one. Former more likely. Would have to make special provision for previous speakers to speak again /2
Tory MPs who attended the Downing St drinks were expecting a bit of a rousing unity speech from PM - surprised there wasn’t one at all even “none of you will be back here” type cajoling. On the way out none I spoke to had changed mind.

Some (early and initial, so heavily caveated) thoughts on the EEA Withdrawal Agreement which the Government released “publicly” on the day Parliament rose for the Christmas recess (without it appears making an announcement to the public via a media or press release)
First, there are those who incorrectly say a127 notice is not needed because the UK is only a member of the EEA via EU membership (the a126 argument). They are wrong for the reasons others including the former president of the EFTA court Carl Baudenbacher and @george_yarrow
@GeorgePeretzQC and myself have previously stated. The UK signed the EEA agreement sui generis and whilst an EU state is obliged to be a signatory to the agreement that is not the same saying a signatory state has to be a member of the EU (or efta).

At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?
