The Withdrawal Agreement, the deal that made Cabinet ministers resign and that no one supports is the 'real' deal. That is, it is what is legally enforceable, it's what both parties, the UK and the EU have said WILL happen...

The Political Agreement, the deal that is in the news now is an aspirational document. It is both parties HOPE may happen, eg they hope there will some magical new solution to the NI border issue, they hope workers rights will be protected. It's NOT legally enforceable..

So..The actual deal, the one that will really happen, the Withdrawal agreement is still as botched as it ever was. We still end up stuck in an expensive, powerless limbo land. That's why Labour will vote against it...

The political declaration is words not actions, no gurantees let alone plans that any of it will happen. It's doesn't save the botched deal. The real deal (Withdrawal Agreement) will STILL fail the Commons...

Therefore, in substance, nothing has changed with the Political Agreement. We're still in chaos, May can't govern. We can't go on like this, Labour should be asked to form a government after May's deal fails and then we can start to get out of this Tory created mess.

i've seen a few posts in the last few days along the lines of "I'm a Labour member leaving the party because of Brexit". No doubt some people genuinely feel this, yet I can't help feeling many of these are fake posts part of a co-ordinated campaign. A Thread on why..

I have called out some of these posts when I've seen them. If genuine, it would take about 2 minutes for the person to tweet a copy of their Labour Party membership card to prove they really are members. Not one has replied yet.

The Tories and their media mates are dodging the question of what happens when May's botched #Brexit deal gets voted out by The Commons.
This Thread is on why the Brexit deal vote is essentially a vote of confidence and why a defeat should mean a General Election.

The key concept here is 'confidence'. A government stays in power by having the confidence of the House of Commons. Meaning that it has a majority to pass its business. Losing a vote of confidence means they've 'lost' the House and by convention a General Election is due

The #Brexit deal vote is for all intents and purposes a vote of confidence. It is what the Tories have said themselves their government is all about achieving. It's been their excuse for neglect of other areas of policy, like social care. It is a "big set piece" vote.

1. #Brexit was never an economic proposition but that doesn't mean we can simply disregard the economic concerns. They are both real and urgent. Our future trade and geostrategic position matters - and for Brexit to be workable long term we need to be mindful of that.
2. On that score we need to start from a position of relative strength - which we won't if we leave without a deal. We'll be taking a hit of anywhere up to 200bn a year in trade by way of losing critical single market participation. That's a substantially weaker starting position
3. Much of our trade is interwoven. It's not a matter of shipping a tin of beans from point A to point B. Complex products are only worth selling if you can sell the service contracts that go with them - and that means being able to dispatch engineers.

The ERG hates the backstop. They want a unilateral exit clause - but the more they talk about that, the more the EU and Irish are going to cling to the need for a backstop that guarantees no return to a hard border. /2
@theresa_may But let us say, for sake of argument, that the ERG gets its way.

The brave new PM (Raab, Boris, DD or whoever) rides into Brussels with an ultimatum: it's the deal-minus-backstop, or No deal.

on Dec 11 will allow the UK to renegotiate the Irish backstop, specifically the right to leave unilaterally.

#Brexit thoughts this AM. The draft Withdrawal Agreement has a Northern Ireland sub-committee to the Joint Committee and sounds like there's been progress on an arbitration panel for the governance of the treaty = forum to discuss exit from a temporary customs arrangement? (1)
