The agenda @Ocasio2018 is pushing — strong labor unions, serious infrastructure investment, income/health/housing security, a pro-family employment regime — has been pushed by Americans throughout the past century. It's not a foreign menace: it's as American as apple pie! <1/13>
Don't believe me? Here's Young Republicans in the 1950s bragging about strong unions, good working conditions and social security expansion: <2/13>
Here's Nixon, Humphrey and McGovern debating universal basic income vs. a federal jobs guarantee — two policies that are allegedly "far left" and that only just recently re-entered the debate: <3/13>
Here's Eisenhower decrying union busters as "unreconstructed reactionaries": <4/13>
Here's Harry Truman fighting off monied interests to push for his version of Medicare for All: <5/13>
Here's Martin Luther King pushing for the equivalent of a $15 minimum wage at the March on Washington: <6/13>
Here's William Howard Taft pushing for 3 months vacation (!) for every American: <7/13>
Here's Eleanor Roosevelt fighting to ensure labor leaders are at the table while the UN Declaration of Human Rights is being drafted: <8/13>
And (just for kicks) here's Newt Gingrich arguing for urgent action to fight climate change: <9/13>
This agenda that @Ocasio2018 is pushing isn't some menacing threat to American prosperity — it's in fact the latest edition of the agenda that built and expanded American prosperity! <10/13>
When Roosevelt and King and others pushed it back then, elitist aristocrats fought back hard. It's no surprise that today's elitist aristocrats — like Don Jr. — are fighting back hard, too. <11/13>
But we need to keep pushing that all-American, deeply democratic agenda— the agenda that respects the creative promise of ordinary Americans; the agenda that sees freedom as participation in power... <12/13>
... the agenda that stands for: strengthening Americans and their communities; opening up economic and state power to more Americans in more ways; and breaking down the barriers that stand in the way of achieving the just national solidarity that we all so dearly desire. <13/13>
