China is a gigantic, very complex country, and given how low editorial standards are and how often disinformation & lies are spread (and given the US gov. recently claimed China is the top threat to "national security") we should be especially skeptical of Western media reporting 
I repeat: Western corporate media reporting/propaganda on China is little different than the stupid lies on North Korea. Fake stories don't need evidence; if an anonymous (US-funded) person in China makes up an outlandish rumor, it spreads across the media
Corporate media standards on East Asia are so low it's beyond laughable. Fake stories (some created by satirists) that North Korea feeds naked officials to dogs, forces everyone to have the same haircut, etc. are spread as "news" without any verification
