Canvassing whether to catch up on the #C4Brexit debate. Anything new to be learned, or are we still in CakeLand?
Ok, so first impression is that @krishgm is doing a terrific job of making people answer questions they prefer not to.

And, regardless of my own preference for a #PeoplesVote, i do think James Cleverly made a decent start, almost just by turning up to defend an unpopular deal.
I see @iankatz1000 has made that point already...

I’m too exhausted for this!

And that’s someone with a clear understanding of what the Article 50 revocation, backstop, European Court and AG legal advice is actually about. Little wonder so many people have just switched off Brexit.

If that’s a thing, I think it is a fitting description of Theresa May.

Some thoughts on why, for all the spectacle of being a lone figure battling on all sides, May does not deserve a nation’s sympathy. /1
All throughout this process, and Brexit is very a much a process (to which I will return), there have been a series of choices. At each turn, May has made very poor choices.

It is those choices which have led us to the precipice on which we sit as a nation today. /2
Of those choices, to my mind, it is the failure of transparency which has had the most serious ramifications.

Indeed, it can’t even be described as a failure of transparency.

It was a conscious choice in May’s part to keep reality cloaked in darkness during her premiership. /3

1. There was only ever one coherent reason to remain in the EU and that was to stop it becoming the monster it very obviously wants to become. For a time that was a valid basis for being in the EU, but in many respects it didn't work because it went ahead with fiscal union anyway
2. What the UK proved is that we could, to a point, control the pace, but not the destination, and when the EU goes ahead with something, even without us, being in its gravitational orbit we tend to get sucked along with it. To a point that much won't change even after Brexit.
3. We really dodged the bullet by not joining the Euro which would have been a catastrophe for the UK but now the Euro is established, the functioning of the EU and the running of it is increasingly none of our business. We're not in the fast lane of the EU and we dont need to be

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.
