Plagues commemorating an extended family of 20 Holocaust victims have been stolen from a central Rome street, @repubblica reports.
They remember Orabona and Mosè Di Consiglio, their children and grandchildren, ranging in age from 74 to 18 months

Here follows the account of the rounding up and deportation of the Jewish people of the Rome ghetto on October 16 1943, by witness Giacomo Debenedetti. It was the oldest Jewish community in Europe, and they were sent to Auschwitz.

"It's all too true they're taking everyone, everyone without exception, worse than you can ever imagine."

"The intent to humiliate and demoralize these people and reduce them to remnants of humans with no will of their own and no longer almost any self-respect, was immediately apparent."

"She tried calling out her name but another face came to the grating and gestured to her to stop. This entreaty for silence, not to attempt to recoup them for mankind, is the last word, the last sign of life to reach us from them."

"...those alone rounded up on 16 October amount to more than a thousand, although this figure is certainly too low since many families were abducted in their entirety without leaving word of themselves, nor a single relative or friend in a position to report their disappearance."

Enrica di Consiglio and her son Mario Marco, a toddler, were taken in the October 16 roundup described above. Mario Marco was killed in Auschwitz a week later; his mother's place of death is unknown.

Also rounded up on October 16 were Mario Marco's aunt Celeste and his three cousins Ada, Marco and Mirella di Consiglio, all aged under seven.
