Yes, the US press is so brave & free - when it comes to foreign leaders. Remember when, after 9/11, all TV networks obeyed the government's orders not to broadcast video of Osama bin Laden explaining the attack on the ground he'd included coded messages to activate sleeper cells?
US media obeyed the government's orders to impose a blackout on Al Qaeda explaining their motives for the 9/11 attack (US violence & interference in the Muslim world), which is what let @DavidFrum & friends create the bullshit "they-hate-us-for-our-freedom" fairy tales.
Then there was that time in 2004 when NYT discovered Bush/Cheney was *illegally* eavesdropping on Americans, but sat on the story upon the orders of the WH, only to publish it *after* Bush's win because Jim Risen was going to break the story in his book theintercept.com/2018/01/03/my-…

Now that Warren emphatically supported Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria & Afghanistan - ignoring @Maddow's desperate bait to bash Trump & instead condemned Endless War - the silence on these issues of Sanders (&, to a lesser extent, @AOC) becomes harder to maintain:
I emailed Sanders' office on Dec 26 to ask his view on Syria troop withdraw - was told they were discussing it but he didn't yet have a position. As I said, people are entitled to time to address complex matters, but these debates are central & ongoing silence is hard to justify.
To be clear, the quote I got when I emailed Sanders' office on Dec 26 about Syria troop withdrawal was this: "We’ve been discussing but he hasn’t made a statement yet." They're now suggesting this doesn't mean he has no position, just that he hasn't publicly expressed one yet.

This is the Caucasian wisent, a species of European bison extinct since 1927.

It was poached into non-existence after settlement by humans in the mountains of the Western Caucasus. It long survived predation by the Caspian tiger and Asiatic lion but not the presence of humans.
The Caribbean monk seal was native to the Caribbean and is believed to be extinct.

The seals were extensively slaughtered by humans in the 18th and 19th centuries for the oil in their blubber. The last confirmed sighting was in between Jamaica and the Yucatán Peninsula in 1952.

This Day in Labor History: November 7, 1861. The Port Royal Experiment begins, an attempt to employ black agricultural workers outside slavery. Let's talk about the limits of abolitionists to re-imagine black labor and how ex-slaves had strong economic demands.
It’s a little hard to imagine the debates about black work in 1861. The idea that African-Americans were inherently lesser than whites was so ingrained, it was a real and open question in the North whether black people would work without white supervision.
In part, this is what the Port Royal Experiment was about. What would black people do on the cotton farms without their masters? Moreover, the North really needed the cotton.

Sea arrivals in #Spain are increasing.
But the closure of a #migration route doesn't mean that automatically migrants just move to a different one. There is little evidence of a 'route replacement' trend.

This is an important reminder that 'immigration policies' can affect migration flows but are hardly the only factor at play. The drivers of #migration are multiple and can't be reduce to the political will 'at destination'.

So for the past week one of our southern resident orca whales has been carrying around her dead calf. This is heartbreaking for a number of reasons including that our southern resident orcas are endangered. time.com/5353745/orca-d…
Given the mother’s response, there’s been ongoing coverage with lots of headlines including words like grief and mourning, and many of the whale researchers have been using these words too.
Let me be clear: I am not here to say that they’re wrong, or that non-human animals can’t feel sad. There’s nothing about orca societies or brains that would preclude high emotional intelligence and in fact, just like it has for humans, it may contribute to their success.
