Australia passes controversial law that will force tech & telecommunications companies to work with law enforcement agencies to make encrypted communications accessible: computerweekly.com/news/252454436…
The new Australian law makes a curious distinction between 'selective' & 'systemic' circumvention of encryption. The former is permitted, the latter not. But how is it possible to force a company to subvert encryption for one person w/out weakening it in principle for everyone?
On its face the Australian law seems more restrained to me than the UK's Investigatory Powers Act; a 'technical capability notice' in the UK law can be used to compel removal of encryption & there's no attempt, unlike in Australia, to prohibit the 'systemic' use of the power.
