New website shines light on @Apple's complicity in China censorship -- blocking people's access to western news sources, info on human rights & religion, & privacy-enhancing apps that would circumvent the country’s pervasive online surveillance regime: theintercept.com/2019/02/01/app…
Some of the apps Apple's censoring in China: 600+ VPNs, news sources like @NYTimes, @RadioFreeAsia, Tibetan News, @VOT_Tibetan; counter-censorship tools like @TorProject & @PsiphonInc; Google; &
@zh_bitterwinter, which provides info on human rights & religious freedoms in China:
An Apple spokesperson insisted to me that the company doesn't "censor," it just follows the law. I said: but what if the law is to censor? They said: we follow the law. 🤔 theintercept.com/2019/02/01/app…
I've received several messages like this one from some of the hundreds of companies & organisations whose apps @Apple has censored in China to placate the country's authoritarian govt & ensure continued market access:
Words vs actions. @Tim_Cook says "privacy is a fundamental human right. No matter what country you live in that right should be protected." Meanwhile, Apple censors privacy tools like VPNs & @torproject in China, helping the country's govt spy on citizens.
