Trying to explain “mere reasonableness” to rationalists typically goes something like this…

It’s so hard to set aside the unthought cognitivist assumption that everyday human activity can only be the result of a machine that is a defective approximation to formal rationality.
Any field that seriously investigates what people actually do rediscovers this insight. Ethnomethodology has gone further than others.

Could Twitter split into Interesting People Net and Hatred Mob Net, to serve each of its current constituencies better?

What features could they add/remove to make each branch naturally attract people of that sort?

If you are smart and lucky, by the time you get your PhD, you have figured out that your research discipline is fatally flawed and no meaningful progress is possible.

Now you are stuck: unemployable except as an active colluder in obscuring this reality.

An important practical problem plus an attractive technical formulation generate an exciting research discipline, with funding, journals, conferences, and the appearance of interesting incremental results.

Usually this is all wasted because fundamental assumptions are false.
The foundational asumptions of most research fields are forgotten as soon as possible, because they are inconveniently wrong.

This is one major reason science has become so unproductive, I think.

I’ve had to relearn this lesson repeatedly myself:

I spent three years working in structure-based drug discovery before I understood that its fundamental assumption, that intermolecular force fields derived from in vacuuo small-molecule measurements can predict large-molecule interactions in water, was utterly wrong.

1. A friend was on a jury that tried to convict people who may or may not have been guilty (a doctor and nurse practitioner). She was the lone hold out that resulted in a hung jury despite tremendous pressure from fellow jurors to change her vote.
2. But she’s a mathematician and highly analytical and said the prosecution failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they were guilty of the charges. At a 2nd trial they were acquitted. If my friend had been more susceptible to peer pressure they would be in jail.
3. She told me it completely changed her view of our “justice” system. Jurors engaged in vote trading and changed their votes because they were tired of being in court and wanted to go home to their families, jobs, or go on vacation.

I grew up with working class parents in a conservative town in Ohio. I’m a political scientist. I am married to a black man from the rural South. Currently reside just outside DC. Context! 1/
Um, so, regular people from the middle of the country are probably right when they pick any political figure and call them a terrible person. Any of them. Either party. Strategic elites violate good person norms. 2/
And frankly, having grown up in a totally “everyday white American” environment, I feel icky on the regular in DC. We drive away from the area and I feel “cleaner.” The constant transactional interaction is really culturally jarring. 3/

AU wherein, despite the prejudice people have against hybrids, Jeongguk’s managed to work his way up the ranks and establish a name for himself.
Taehyung, a hybrid w/ a difficult temperament, somehow falls under his care.
The only problem? Jeongguk wants nothing to do with him.
Little context:
More often than not, hybrids are sold as ‘pets’. The handful that do make smth out of themselves still fall victim to some sort of discrimination. Jeongguk’s gone through a lot & is disgusted by it all, so when Taehyung’s given to him, he hates the entire ordeal.
Notes
• Jeongguk has been aged up, so he’s four years older than Taehyung purely to allot for time wherein he becomes successful.
• This may border on nsfw.
• Taehyung will not act as a ‘pet’ or anything similar. He is a person.
