1. OK..<EPIC THREAD> on making the Prowler 'Elephant' noise for #Spiderverse and other ELECTRONIC NOISES. I did some sessions with a good friend of mine Brian Dougans who has an amazing collection of electronic gear. You might recognise this sound...
2. We used a huge array of electronics both old - like the EMS Synthi (well known to diehard #DrWho fans) - and new - like the FSOL Digitana SX-1 (which Brian helped design!), through pedals and things to jam out a whole bunch of crazy noises...
3. The unstable and analogue nature of the gear would create a really unique and menacing sound that cut through like nothing else. The most recognisable of these is probably the Prowler sound which you can hear on this track here: open.spotify.com/track/0p4G0l12…
4. But we also created loads of other sounds from the film just through experimenting and jamming ideas. This one for instance, heavily fed through a EMS Synthi, pops up a number of times in the film...
5...whenever you see a certain other baddie WHO'S NAME I WON'T REVEAL incase you haven't seen #Spiderverse yet but you can hear how a variant of it works in the score around 0'15 here.. open.spotify.com/track/5T28njB5…
6. We also experimented with tons of other ideas. This is one of my favs - a small brush on the end of a RC motor that we controlled the voltage to and then pushed against the springs on a spring reverb that had been dampened with my debit card and a glasses cleaning cloth..
7. I'd then take these sounds and re-sample them to make percussion, pads, textures, anything really, that I could incorporate into my writing of the score...
8. Sometimes I'd get my good friends @slateandash to also turn these sounds into very cool Kontakt instruments I could play with further. Here's one of the first ones they made me that was very funny for all of 5 mins until I got sick of seeing my stupid face spinning round.
9. I'd then use these sounds to help me write, or maybe I would re-sample them to create new sounds, or even fire them off to our good friend @DJBlakeyUk to scratch them into something else new..
10..and then on top of that we might add live percussion or full orchestra depending on the cue...
11. It would then fall to the lucky @samjokell to make sense of all of this @abbeyroad. He did an amazing mix as always, but this time we did a lot of experimental extreme crazy sound placements in @Dolby Atmos for the score which was an exciting first for us too..
12. And then FINALLY we got the whole thing done. It was so inspiring to work with the amazing team behind #Spiderverse that all of us wanted to push it as far as we could to keep up with everyone else involved. Here's where we finished.. THANKS! open.spotify.com/album/5KP2NReD…
