Thread: Most folks know by now that last week U.S District Judge O’Connor in Fort Worth ruled the individual mandate in the ACA, and therefore the rest of the ACA, to be unconstitutional throwing the legislation that has protected and provided coverage for many into question. 1/8
The effort to have the ACA ruled unconstitutional was spearheaded by TX AG @KenPaxtonTX along with 19 other states. What most people don’t know is that Paxton is also currently under criminal indictment for two counts of securities fraud. 2/8
This is the second time that the Texas Attorney General has used his office as a political bludgeon to strike down a policy that has broad popular support and a mandate from the American people. 3/8
The first was his suit against DACA that lead to a temporary halt in accepting applications & tried to sunset the program until a judge ruled the halt unconstitutional. All of this is being done while @KenPaxtonTX is being investigated for securities fraud. 4/8
The criminal case against Ken Paxton alleges that while he was in the #txlege as a state rep. he solicited funding for companies that he worked for. Afterward, although he claimed it was a gift from the founder, @KenPaxtonTX received 100K shares from Servergy. 5/8
This is exactly the kind of rank corruption that we are seeing from the Trump administration that should trouble TX voters enough to send legislators to the #txlege in 2020 that will curb Paxton’s penchant for shaping national policy through less than democratic means. 6/8
Meanwhile, TX is leaving over $100B on the table by failing to expand Medicaid. This also means that 1 million people in TX go w/o healthcare insurance bc our Repub. elected officials prefer to serve their wealthy donors w/ tax cuts over their constituents’ healthcare needs. 7/8
I encourage you to start by contacting your legislators in the upcoming #txlege session. Grassroots pressure matters bc it sends a clear message about what we will support & what we as constituents won’t allow. This we should not allow. 8/8
