A guide to Labour's conference position, agreed unanimously by 300 people in a long meeting and backed overwhelmingly by delegates... 1) It commits Labour to trying to participate in the Single Market...
2) The resolution commits Labour MPs to vote against any deal which breaches the 6 tests. May's current deal breaches those tests and thus any MP supporting it is in breach of party policy on the key issue of the era...
3) Labour's position demands MPs vote against any deal which leaves a border in Ireland.
4) If May loses the deal she must dissolve parliament and call a general election. By implication Labour will move no confidence at a suitable moment after the deal is lost.... but...
5) If Labour cannot force an election it must support "all options remaining on the table" including a 2nd referendum. None of the other process options are amplified. Second referendum is spelled out in detail - indeed outcome will be a campaign to reform the EU. Read it.
6) It is quite clear that what the second referendum should be about is the government's deal - not some deal that has yet to be negotiated.
7) I am very happy with this strategy and would have voted for it if I'd been a delegate: so until the confidence motion fails, all focus has to be on forcing May to dissolve parliament...
8) If that fails it is Labour policy to either support or move an amendment proposing a second referendum. We may lose (partly due, again to MPs defying policy); in that case initiative moves back to May to delay A50. It's quite clear in the motion what we are committed to doing
9) I should add that this is not seen as a matter of conjecture by the people in the room who negotiated the composite. If the election push fails, the only way to stop a Brexit that fails our 6 tests is to force May to call a second referendum.
10) If May wants to avoid the most ignominious defeat ever suffered by a PM in modern times, she has to commit to a permanent Customs Union and participation in the Single Market (ie Labour's position) before this Friday.
