Read the entire thread. It highlights the early role played by Bengali intellectuals in promotion of Hindi as national language.
Interestingly many of the Bengali believed that only reason British didn't want to promote Hindi on national scale was because it will create unity among Indians.

Contrast it with the 21st century Bhadralok with 1/100th of intellect of his ancestors as quoted in the tweet above!
