Many have asked me if the New Sherrif in Town will enhance or setback the Reform process, they want to know what is slowing down the process and made enquiries about the position of the reformation process and also raised concerns about the cannibalization of AIGs/DIGs.
The only thing holding the reformation process back is the critical starting point of the repeal and replacement of the Police Act Of which the Bill has just crossed the public hearing and currently undergoing final technical review before the final hearing.
It’ll subsequently be passed by NASS and transmitted to the Presidency for assent. Let’s just say the political activities cut into that process and we will soon resume.
Meanwhile we have put in place stop gaps that will forestall a relapse of the banditry and impunity of the Police generally. SARS impunity has majorly subsided and we are working across Nigeria with OC SARS of each state in sync. Lagos is leading the way.
The change in leadership honestly may not have much effect or impact on the reform process because the police can’t reform themselves. They can’t be a judge in their own case however responsible. The erstwhile IGP cooperated effectively with our team on the stop gap regardless.
we will however be meeting the New IGP before the end of the month. To brief him on what we have done, what we are doing and what we hope to achieve as an End goal for the good of all concerned (Police and the people).
We are actually concerned about the cannibalization of DIGs/AIGs which has become a trend under this admin. The police have been militarized, AIGs and DIGs are seen as Generals that must be sacrificed to shore up a more willing & impressionable low ranking officer...
...a decision that is mostly not based on meritocracy. This calls for concern if we ever hope to strengthen the Police Institution. The assessment of the havoc unleashed in our society under the reign of IGP Idris should not be normalized or made to be our culture.
