Important question. What does Labour’s commitment to “strong single market provision” mean? How does it differ from the Government’s plan or from Norway +.
As anyone following me knows, the State aid rules (the issue raised by Corbyn before Christmas) are in fact irrelevant here: Labour’s customs union policy already necessarily means accepting State aid rules, whatever relationship is sought with the single market.
So what is the difference between what Labour is seeking and a Norway type relationship with the single market? It can only be freedom of movement.
If that is, truly, not a red line for Labour, then a closer relationship - especially on services - opens up. But if it is, it’s very hard to see a significant difference between what Labour wants and the model sketched out in the current EU/UK Political Declaration.
