Britain is responsible for centuries of bloodshed on the Irish island, which was only ended by the Good Friday Agreement creating a delicate balance between Northern Ireland's attachment to the UK & Ireland.

Both Brexit options skew that balance. A GOOD Britain wouldn't do that.
So... when I point out that in light of our colonial treatment of our Irish neighbours since the 1500's, I'd like for the country I love to avoid tarnishing its moral reputation further by not trashing the very thing put in place to make amends, I get this
And who doesn't love a classic
But this is one of the fundamental problems we're dealing with.
We seem to think that loving your country means believing it's capable of thriving under any conditions, and that questioning its actions is somehow an act of betrayal.
Despite our colonial past...
I've said this before but it's important;
If you love your country just because it's your country, you don't really love your country. Loving your country means wanting make sure it's GOOD as well as great.

Thousands of lives were lost in The Troubles: British Lives. Irish Lives. Unionist lives. Nationalist lives.The people of Northern Ireland paid the highest price for the peace that the Good Friday Agreement created.

This was at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.
I rang my friend over in Northern Ireland before tweeting this, because I know that many people on the other side of the Irish Sea do not see things the way the person in my video describes them AT ALL. I am sorry for that. This video is aimed at a specifically British audience.
In the past 48 hours I've presented two completely opposing sides of the issues in Northern Ireland and been thoroughly and passionately criticised for both.
Which proves the obvious point: The current arrangements maintain a delicate balance that we shouldn't be messing with.

Breaking: the EU will issue a letter later this morning spelling out reassurances on the Irish backstop. The letter has been penned by European Council President @eucopresident Donald Tusk and Commission president @JunckerEU. A simultaneous letter will be sent by PM @theresa_may
The EU letter will contain a series of reassurances about the Irish backstop. These include a declaration that the backstop is not the optimal solution, that it won’t undermine the Good Friday Agreement, it is not part of an EU ploy to trap the UK nor is it designed to “annex” NI
The letter will insist there can be no renegotiation of the backstop or Withdrawal Agreement.

The "Irish" border is often wrongly presented as a foreign obstacle: the so-called "Irish Question". In reality the border is the UK's border and those who wish to "Bin the Backstop" should consider the risks to the existence of the United Kingdom if that were to happen.

THREAD:
Prime Minister Theresa May’s motivation for agreeing to the Backstop is to protect the gains of the Northern Ireland peace process which ended 30 years of civil war in this country.
The EU is fundamentally a peace project so border questions are existential for them. British views of the EU as simply a common market have always been misguided. The EU uses economics and law as a means not an end. EU27 Brexit positions need to be understood in this context.

Why Norway?

Well, the answer to that lies on the island of #Ireland. Due to the GFA, there are not many ways of squaring the circle of having the hard border that is required by the WTO, Northern Ireland remaining in the UK and the UK being outside the customs union.
So the options faced by HMG are:

1 - call a border poll and let Northern Ireland and the Republic reunite as a single entity. While the Conservatives are nominally the Conservative & Unionist Party, there are many who would not share a tear at the loss of NI....

It admits defeat almost from the outset, by arguing that UK Govt "conceded too much” last December in the Joint Report. /2
Recall the UKG promise to avoid a hard border “including any physical infrastructure or related checks and controls.”

That set's a high bar for MaxFac - so high that Davis and Boris talk about some infrastructure, "set back" from the border. /3
