THREAD: Let's have a fun creative experiment. What if the Covington high school kids were actually black and brown kids with hijabs & kufis from a private Muslim school & Nathan Phillips was a MAGA hat wearing elder and Marine Corp vet? Everything else stays the same. 1/
All media would be horrified, rightfully so, & admonish their boorish, disrespectful behavior. The chaperones & teachers would be admonished. Trump would tweet about it, add something about needing the travel ban, protecting Western culture & scary Middle Eastern prayer rugs. 2/
All would demand civility. Every talk show across the board would invite & adulate Nathan Phillips for his grace. Some will mistakenly say he's a Vietnam vet. They'll correct the record & say he was actually in the Marine Corp. No one would care. They'd praise his service. 3/
Nathan Phillips, wearing his MAGA hat & flannel shirt, would be invited to the White House for cold Big Macs, taking a selfie with Trump, Pence and, his favorite, Sarah Huckabee Sanders. This weekend, he'd appear in a SNL segment. Later, he'll make a cameo at the Emmy’s. 4/
The Covington Muslim kids? Well, there would be calls for an investigation into the school, accusing them of fostering of hatred, intolerance and support for a radical religious theology. They would examine the curriculum and background of every teacher. 5/
Every interview with the Covington Muslim kids would be aggressive and confrontational, patronizing and sermonizing. “How could you?” “Don’t you know any better?” Their boorish behavior would be based on their culture and inability to integrate. No PR firm will touch them. 6/
The smirking Muslim kid's life will be destroyed. His parents will be harassed. They'll eventually move. He apologizes for the rest of his life, but it's never enough. Meanwhile, Nathan Phillips runs for Congress in his MAGA hat & wins.
