Conceding to the Venezuela opposition “Maduro is bad, but...” you’re not just talking about Maduro, but about a mass poor peoples’ movement that is in power—highly politically active, fighting to build an equal society, and THEY CHOSE Maduro for a role but THEY are in power...
People act like Maduro is making all the decisions with a small cabal. Nothing could be further from the truth! Millions of poor Venezuelans play a role in debate, discussion and decision making on moving the country forward. I saw mass meetings happening all the time, everywhere
That’s what PSUV in power means—people who had been silenced for centuries finally had a seat at the table, and are actually in power themselves. Their democracy isn’t just voting every few years, but an everyday process. Maduro fills a position but the power is this social force
When you hear 6.2 million voted for Maduro (out of an adult population of 20million) they aren’t just voters like in the US; most are poor & working-class politically conscious activists that are involved, on many levels, in how decisions are made and executed everyday
This mass movement of the poor who are true progressives & socialists—& a force unparalleled in Venezuela—has asked us to respect their constitution, their process, & their democratic decisions; & to worry about what our government is doing rather than criticizing their decisions
The opposition, of course, doesn’t just want Maduro gone, but the real power that is behind him—poor & working peoples’ power. They just shorten it to “Maduro is bad” but it means much more, and it means much more when Americans say it too
