People act like Maduro is making all the decisions with a small cabal. Nothing could be further from the truth! Millions of poor Venezuelans play a role in debate, discussion and decision making on moving the country forward. I saw mass meetings happening all the time, everywhere
That’s what PSUV in power means—people who had been silenced for centuries finally had a seat at the table, and are actually in power themselves. Their democracy isn’t just voting every few years, but an everyday process. Maduro fills a position but the power is this social force

Venezuela’s opposition has been invited to collaborate and participate with the mass Chavista movement for years to resolve problems. They have flatly refused, saying this huge, majority social movement of the poor should have no voice—should be silenced. That is a fascist vision
In Venezuela I learned that the only way this minority, unpopular right-wing movement could take and hold power from the pro-government masses is by extreme violence backed by the US, most likely WITH the US military. That is the scariest thing about this whole situation
Maduro even created Constituent Assembly election to meet opposition demands PEACEFULLY, COOPERATIVELY. Even extended candidate deadlines, begging the opposition to run. They refused, and instead murdered candidates and attacked voters & polling places

We fled the country because they were trying to lynch us too. A week later, they shot our reporter colleague in the back, nearly killed her. The opposition is fascist through and through

Entre 2016 e inicios de 2018, Zapatero y el dominicano Leonel Fernández encabezaron un proceso de mediación entre el madurismo y la oposición.
Novedad relevante: una parte importante de la oposición venezolana se había sentado a la mesa de negociaciones, tras el fracaso de otras vías un tanto más violentas. La mediación de Zapatero fue, en un principio, apoyada por países de la región, EE.UU., Vaticano, Rusia.
En julio de 2017 había sido electa una Asamblea Constituyente plenipotenciaria e ilegítima. Maduro quebró el principio 1 persona, 1 voto. Obtuvo más de 500 sobre 545 convencionales. Abandonó así la principal virtud del proceso chavista, que había sido el respeto por las urnas.
