As some of you may know and some of you may wish not to know, I started a little experiment about 10 months ago and began eating a low-carb and high fat diet for the first time in my life. I have not been tracking macros specifically but I can say a few things:
1) I have been in nutritional ketosis pretty much every day (as measured by countless ways) save a few days here and there where I accidentally or intentionally slipped

2) I have eaten between 20 and 75g of carbs/day (estimated)
3) I have tried to keep my protein intake about the same

4) Since, as I am fond of saying, nutrition is zero-sum, I increased my intake of fats. Here, I tried to keep SFA intake about the same as it was and tried to boost intake of MUFA

Ok, nutrition science thread, in response to this "coconut oil is poison" nonsense. You're probably going to learn some things about cholesterol that will surprise you.
Every argument I've seen against coconut oil is that it's high in saturated fat, which raises your total cholesterol and your LDLs ("bad" cholesterol). This is all true, kinda, but the huge misconception is that high cholesterol is bad, or LDLs are bad. It's not that simple.
First off, most lipid panels don't even measure your LDLs—they calculate it! So pretty much any time your doctor tells you your LDL #, it's useless, and only indicates concentration. If you want a true measurement, ask for an NMR LipoProfile. But, LDLs aren't inherently bad...

This was exactly my problem as an obese, blinded-physician, shackled to data from the dogma of associations & observational studies.

I read about these people with phenomenal weight loss stories online w/ low carb, and I shrugged them off.

How misguided I was!

If you look closely at the head to head trials in ad lib setting, it always favors low carb. But when you look at metabolic ward studies there is no difference. And yet this stands to such stark contrast to the plethora of anecdotal success...

Once, when I was at @PhillyDailyNews, before email was a thing, I wrote my copy long-hand from the ICU. That story, about the ICU, was later nom'd for Pulitzer, but all I remember was thinking those might be my last written words.

Now Trump wants to make yet another critic of #ACA--the only buffer sick & #disabled Americans have until we get #UHC--head of HHS.

#AlexAzar is an actual lobbyist for #BigPharma.
And cut his legal teeth--he's a lawyer--working for #KenStarr investigating the Clintons.
Anyone who thinks sick/#disabled people are going to get a fair shake under this presidency aren't thinking clearly. And while I know we have more Russia news and
more sexual abuse claims today, this appointment impacts EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN WHO IS NOT RICH and it's barely news.
