I’m afraid this is right. Humphrys’ coverage of Brexit is so ignorant of basic facts (“I’m too grand to do research or be briefed by people who know what they’re talking about”) that it is making @BBCr4today’s coverage of Brexit not just a laughing stock, but positively damaging.
I don’t say this lightly. The issues are hard and complex, and good political journalists - especially ones tasked with covering all of politics not just Brexit - can be forgiven for struggling and getting things wrong.
But in general political journalists are showing, over time, a better grasp of the issues. Humphrys, though, is an exception. His understanding does not improve. He shows little sign of being prepared to do - or even listen to - basic research. It is just not good enough.
