There was nothing "inadvertent" about the way Turkey reordered
the chess board in Idlib. It was clearly part of a larger plan to create an ISIS Al-Qaeda Caliphate 2.0 in #Idlib & #Afrin. But @brett_mcgurk spilled the beans on Erdogan and his ISIS affiliation. There may be a way to pacify Idlib but it will take getting #Turkey out of #Syria.

2. Make a deal to sell cheap fuel to Turkish folks on Syrian border. Make it a little Turkish development zone by just having cheap NES petrol. It would be a good deal for Turkey that rightfully has a gripe about how oil was divided up in Sykes Picot. Syrians get trade.
3. Damascus & the ERV field lenders all get a taste. @coalition 🇺🇸 gets peace and stability. Nothing settles a war like a little money. 😎 @WHNSC @IvankaTrump @GoldmanSachs @Conoco @USEmbassySyria

1. Trump was Plan B.
In 2014 my focus was on the very real possibility that Russia was going to invade Ukraine and fears that unless @BarackObama acted fast to reinforce the Baltics Putin would roll on. To coin the phrase, it was not a drill.
2. I stayed engaged reporting on the Ukraine war and believed that the fight against ISIS, though important, was a diversion. I looked then and I look now as ISIS having been nurtured by state actors. In my view Russia in particular worked with Turkey to arm ISIS and help

1st there's a Western social media "pro-Syria space" that hopes to create as much hate for whoever is still living there and therefore panders heavily to Western islamophobes by showing lots of veiled women ...
... Russia too has decided to use its kinda "official" channels to create as much dislike of the inhabitants of Idlib as possible ... here Idlib is now a "den" - not a province of Syria with ordinary Syrians ALSO still living there and having to make do - "terrorists" or not ...

Now the city together with the whole Jabal al-Zawiya region of #Idlib are freed of jihadists, thanks to local #FSA & #JTS
