Tory Brexit zealot Dan Kaczynski MP claims that, unlike Germany, the poor old UK didn’t benefit from the US Marshall Plan to help it recover after WW2. Except it did. It was literally the biggest beneficiary.

Thing is, even if Slovenia *had* been part of the Soviet bloc during the Cold War (as opposed to part of a country that was a leading light in the Non-Aligned Movement, mixed economy, etc), would *still* have been immensely insulting & a huge gaffe to use the “vassal state” meme.
Can you imagine Hunt going to Estonia and saying that they’ve made fantastic progress considering that 30 years ago they were a “Soviet vassal state”? Less historically inaccurate than saying it in Slovenia but still insensitive, crassly insulting & a horrific diplomatic gaffe.
And that wasn’t the only tin-eared stuff in Hunt’s speech: wow, that smarmy stuff being a “fellow European country” and about Slovenia‘s transformation being “Europe at its best” makes my skin crawl and will have come over as immensely patronising and insincere.

Question: if we have a new breakaway party that builds on the LibDems’ party machinery but is open to former Labour and Conservative supporters disillusioned with the direction their parties have taken, what should it be called?
Working proposal: One Progressive Liberal Nation

Progressive: hat-tip to what the ex-Labour lot believe in

Liberal: ditto LibDems

One Nation: ditto Tories - no room for One Nation Conservatism in a pro-Brexit party which includes the likes of Dorries, Rosindell & Kawczynski

I’m on a blocking spree. Blocking all sorts with gay abandon: James Cleverly, Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Jones, Rural Conservative Movement, Candace Owens, Steve Hilton, JHB, Jacob Rees-Mogg. Life’s too short.
Forgot to mention James Corden.
Turns out it was some other Tory Brexiter called Hilton that I blocked before, not Steve Hilton. But I’ve made amends by leaving the other one blocked and blocking Steve Hilton as well for good measure.

To understand why, I need to outline 2 important mechanisms that most people, politicians and commentators seem to ignore, dismiss or simply don't get. They have different and somewhat opposite consequences, but are both decisive in the current & foreseeable predicaments.

1st and foremost: the biggest constraint that applies to political decision-making comes from the past decisions & policies.
It is a massive constraint.
Cameron COULD NOT convincingly campaign for #Remain, because his own policies CREATED the discontent channelled by #Leave.

So. Tomorrow the House of Commons will vote on a series of possible amendments to Theresa May's 'Plan B' - or rather the 'plan of action to achieve a Plan B' - which itself officially reads as follows:
The amendment most likely to pass – and therefore the one on which most attention has been paid – is this one from Conservative party chairman Sir Graham Brady. It's effectively an instruction to go back and seek *some unstated other way* to avoid a hard border in Ireland:
Tonight, Theresa May has asked her backbenchers to vote in favour of this amendment. She is basically asking them to tie her hands, so that Brussels will clearly know what it would take to win the Commons' backing for any deal.
