Probably worth saying that on the Continent there is fear that the EU will be trapped in the backstop. Let me point to some statements from a hearing in German Parliament (thread)
Repasi: Consumer protection is not mentioned in the level playing field
Repasi: There’s an enforcement deficit for the level playing field that would allow the UK to obtain unfair advantages.
Stoll: The Withdrawal Agreement as it stands implies a significant loss of control of the EU for the Single Market. Consumer protection is missing. The standards are not sufficiently defined. Enforcement is not provided for sufficiently.
Stoll: Parliamentary cooperation in the joint commities has also been left open.

Just to raise awareness on the danger of shooting ourselves in the foot: The UK is apparently in the process of leaving EUI. (Thread) eui.eu
EUI is the European University Institute, an institution of Higher education and learning. Full disclosure: I have spent some time there. But then... many people in academia have. It is well-known. I would say “elite”, but apparently that’s a bad word these days.

So a DIT traffic light-coded progress report got leaked. Finally businesses have a chance to know what to prepare for. It is deeply disappointing that the only reason they can prepare for Brexit-day is that documents are leaked (short thread)
Trade agreements only work if the people who are supposed to use them know about them. Engagement with stakeholders is essential. People who use EU FTAs should be kept informed how likely it is they can use them post-Brexit.
No serious trade expert thought that it would be easy to transform all EU FTAs into UK FTAs. Few thought it possible do “roll over” all FTAs by B-day. And it will be important to scrutinize the agreements that are made.

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/

1. As media had previously reported #Juncker decided not to focus on what his Commission achieved but on what still needs to be done to convince European citizens to say 'Yes' to the EU when they go to the polls next year.
2. I agree that it is not a good moment for pats on the back and I agree with #Juncker that member-states have in many respects held the Commission up from delivering on Commission's promises.
