Listen David. This is some very good reporting. But I don’t think this will have the impact you’re expecting—it won’t change minds on a border wall or Trump’s reason for it. /1 @Fahrenthold
1. It’s a touching and positive story that these workers were able to come in and earn money to live well in their home countries. Why they never became documented is a mystery you didn’t pursue. Did you ask them? /2
2. None of the illegals you spoke with said they dealt drugs, acted as drug mules, associated with gangs like MS-13, or sought to stay here with their kids living in America. Did you ask why? /3
3. They stayed clean, went to work every day, earned a living, saved and went back to their country. I don’t think that is what the president is talking about building a wall to stop. How does this argue against a wall? /4
5. I would bet most golf resorts, beach resorts, commercial laundries, and other businesses are glad to look the other way on illegals. But not on drugs, gangs, and terrorists. The wall is to stop the latter. /6
(I got out of order: here’s point 4)
4. If Costa Rica and other nations where illegals come in are so terrible, why did the Trump illegals return there? Did you ask? Will this article endanger them as criminals seek to take their money and land? Did you consider that? /5
6. Do you think it makes sense to build a wall to stop the real criminal, gangs, drug cartels and terrorists from freely entering the US in order to allow more migrant workers who have jobs waiting for them come here to work and go home to become land owners? /7
7. Or are you trying to argue that every illegal is like the ones who worked for Trump? That there is no drug or crime problem, because if you are you have given no evidence. /8
8. Are you implying these illegals were mistreated by Trump because they didn’t earn union NJ wages? I think that argues more for the business-killing policies of states like NJ. With the Bedminster course, it seems everyone won. /9
9. On the flip side: are you implying there are good jobs for every illegal who crosses and companies like Trump’s waiting to hire them? This is foolish as many come and live on government handouts and strain our social support systems. /10
10. Did you ask the illegals what government benefits they obtained and used while here in America? Did you investigate the cost of them being here to taxpayers? If you did, you didn’t include it. /11
11. Let’s fix our southern border so it’s not a sieve. Then we can welcome people like those who worked for Trump. They exemplify the American dream, not as Dreamers who want a piece of paper giving them privileges but as workers who earn their way out of poverty. /12 END
