This Day in Labor History: February 14, 1940. A group of 4 Navajo leaders write to Congress in protest of mandatory sheep reduction that was destroying the Navajo economy and social structure. Let's talk about the connections between internal colonialism and ideas of work.
The creation of Navajo sheep culture was a response to the forced transformation of Navajo work culture around raiding and hunting in the face of white domination in 1860s, a phenomenon faced by many tribes during these years.
Many tribes faced allotment under the Dawes Act, forced into small farming economies they were not equipped for and losing their lands to whites as part of the larger strategy to dispossess indigenous people of their land, culture, and work traditions.

This Day in Labor History: February 13, 1865. The Sons of Vulcan win the nation's first union contract. Let's talk about this pioneering early union and this huge victory.
The Sons of Vulcan formed in 1858 in Pittsburgh, including workers laboring in the small but steadily growing steel industry that would explode after the Civil War.
Most of these early iron and steel workers were immigrants who came over from the mills of England, Scotland, and Wales.

Book #14 for 2019--Jonathan Rosenblum, Beyond $15: Immigrant Workers, Faith Activists, and the Revival of Labor Movement. A largely excellent study of the Fight for $15 and unionization campaigns in Sea-Tac. Great look at where unions have to go.

A lot of books in this genre can be frustrating, because they are so pushing an inside baseball agenda where union leadership does no right and worker democracy does no wrong. Rosenblum does not repudiate this, but presents a far more nuanced view.
Rosenblum was one of the SEIU organizers on the Sea-Tac campaign and his point is that worker power needs to be goal of the union movement. He notes that the union movement is simply not prepared to deal with the needed transformation to broad-based community organizing.

I've enjoyed Rick's writing style since his snarky anti-Trump pieces in Politico well before the nomination. But it's blog-style, not opposite-the-masthead Op-Ed style. I also love to find the unlikely off-color metaphor and goose it for all it's worth ;)
A few years ago, I spent some time with Lyndon LaRouche watchers (the old FACTnet forum that migrated to a message board), and it's important not to be too glib with the comparison -- although a devastating comparison exists. LaRouche led a crazy religious-grade personality cult.
LaRouche didn't innovate anything ideologically, but for a time he was a perfect synthesis of the anti-establishment, antiwar left, extreme statism, 50s sci-fi-grade technocracy (Fusion Power Now!), all with the promise of occluded knowledge only Master Lyndon could impart.
