It is a mistake to think that only Islamist movements like the Muslim Brotherhood obsess over “morality.” Sisi’s #Egypt in 2017 carried out the harshest crackdown against the #LGBTQ community in recorded modern #Egyptian history.
Women’s bodies and non-heteronormative people are often the site of “morality” panics used by nominally secular and Islamist regimes alike to unite the public in patriarchal indignation. #Egypt
It is time to rid the Middle East’s penal codes of these morality laws that serve only the hypocrites and misogynists. #Egypt We will truly be free only when morality and decency no longer depend on policing the length of a woman’s skirt, criminalizing suggestive videos or trapping vulnerable groups with the catchall of debauchery accusations.<br /> The reality is that we are all in chains so long as we punish those whom society judges “debauched” and “deviant.”

The right wing, determined to see a woman beater in every Muslim man, seem to celebrate crimes vs Muslim women. The “community,” always led by men, usually downplay crimes vs Muslim women. Given the choice between the "community" and the sister, we must always choose the sister.
In US, shortly before launch of Musawah, a Muslim man beheaded his wife,who’d filed for divorce & obtained restraining order a week before police found her body.Soon after,a culture war erupted btwn anti-Muslim right wing & Muslim apologists over who can save us poor Muslim women
