just out: @AEMO_Media's quarterly energy dynamics — my favourite report.

a few observations:

SA set new all-time minimum *grid* demand: 599MW @ 1pm on 21 oct — primarily driven by increasing rooftop solar. (check out that emerging duck curve!)

highest prices on record in each region (except TAS), on the back of lowest Q4 demand since 2012!

reasons:
• reduced gas generation availability
• high gas prices
• coal generation failures
• higher prices charged by hydro generators

black coal and gas set the price more often than gas and coal in every market compared with the previous quarter.

(few people understand that black coal *frequently* sets the energy price in SA, VIC and TAS, despite them having no *local* black coal generation.)

👀 the significant increase in renewable energy was accompanied by a significant reduction in gas usage — the lowest quarterly gas generation since 2006.

…and the *lowest* brown coal generation since the start of the NEM 21 years ago!

the reduction of gas generation has been caused by:
• increased renewable energy
• high gas prices

sudden unit trips of the coal fleet continued a seasonal pattern:

average solar PV generation at noon grew by just under 2GW (a trend which will not be welcomed by coal generations).

we're seeing significant growth in the contribution of large-scale _storage_ year on year.

we're enjoying modest but steady falls in emissions from electricity generation:

very significant (and expected) falls in large-scale renewable energy certificate (LGC) prices:

NSW remains the only significant net-importer of electricity in the national electricity target:
