Something I always think about on Valentines Day is how Frederick Douglass, as was the case with many enslaved people, did not know his birthday, and so he chose February 14th as the day he would celebrate. An attempt to reclaim something that was taken from him.
Slavery was an outwardly violent, barbaric institution. But there were also so many small, compounding moments of violence.

A child not knowing their birthday is a microcosm for the endless catalogue of small things taken from enslaved ppl that many of us often take for granted.
This is your periodic reminder that Frederick Douglass is one of the best & most important writers in American history. There is no debate there.
