Of course @SingaporeAir has said they have disabled the cameras. But get real: the cameras are available on in flight entertainment systems because someone requested the feature. They increased the unit cost for @SingaporeAir, so *someone* there had a plan for these. 1/4
Given that the cameras increased the unit cost, the plan almost certainly involved a mechanism to monetize them. The only other thing that makes sense is that @SingaporeAir thought there was a value proposition to their customers. But they aren't claiming that, are they? 2/4
I'm not freaking out about more surveillance. I'm not even sure what the threat model would be here. But one thing I'm reasonably sure of is that @SingaporeAir is not acting in good faith here answering questions about why these were deployed. 3/4
There are lessons here for PR people everywhere. If you do things that have the perception of invading privacy, people will be outraged when you are caught. When you are caught (and you will be), don't assume people are stupid. Many aren't, talk to us like adults. 4/4
