I really, really hate the idea of defending someone like Shamima Begum. I vociferously hate ISIS and everything they stand for.

But the Home Secretary is abusing his powers by stripping someone off their British citizenship. It sets a very dangerous precedent.
Imagine if someone commits a crime abroad and they're just disowned by their country. They are left with no right to travel anywhere, live anywhere or even seek a trial.

The Tories will abuse this precedent as every govt has abused terrorism powers to lock up critics.
Shamima Begum should have been brought back to Britain and put on trial here. There she is a threat to locals, who hate ISIS more than we do!

I have no issues with locking her up. But leaving her stateless is an appalling decision.
Conflicting reports:

Sky News says she had dual British & Bangladeshi nationality.

BUT her family's lawyer is disputing it, says she was just a British national.

Did Sky News get their from the Home Office?🤔

It is another example of how Leavers continue to bamboozle Remainers by playing an entirely different game. [thread]
DK's tweet isn't about facts (so fact-checking is a waste of time) - it tells a story about Britain. It's the same story Leavers have been repeating for the past year:

'Britain managed to overcome adversity before, we'll do it again. We are more powerful than our enemies think'
The tweet stirs up emotion (pride) among Leavers. They may know that its not entirely accurate - but they don't care. The SENTIMENT matters more. Its a short story about British history and evokes a strong emotion.

At this point, ridiculing or fact-checking is USELESS.

A brief thread, sparked by this article, in which a Briton is happy to see 'economic apocalypse' with a No Deal Brexit.

These attitudes don't surprise me and exist on all sides of the spectrum. We just find different ways to justify it.

The key difference between Remain and Leave campaigns was (and is) this:

Remain was about facts and evidence, about keeping the status quo.
Leave was an avalanche of emotional triggers: change, empowerment ('take control') and fears.

In Facts Vs Emotions, latter always wins.
Leave also told people mini-stories about the future: some positive, some fearful. Leavers picked stories ('fantasies') they liked and developed an emotional attachment to them.

Once that happens, people justify almost anything to carry on believing. Even 'economic apocalypse'.

I'm a strong and committed Remainer.

But I also think it's a mistake to force Jeremy Corbyn to commit to a second Referendum on Brexit. Labour members shouldn't go down that road.

Here's why:
If Corbyn says he is committed to a second Referendum *before* Theresa May's deal has been voted on, it will be a disaster.

Why? Two reasons:
First, May will immediately accuse him of helping the EU and trying to wreck Brexit. It will unite all Tories (ensuring her deal goes through).

Secondly, it will allow her to say Labour were always angling for No Deal, and are to blame from fallout of No Deal.

This is a Yazidi I met in a roasting refugee camp, with his 2 surviving children. He lost 2 daughters (both under the age of 12) to the beds of ISIS rapists, & his 2 elder sons to brainwashers who turned them into killers for the Caliphate.
His wife was also enslaved. She was shot through the head when she tried to escape. She survived but was left brain-damaged. The owner, via intermediaries, sold her back to her husband. While I spoke to him, I could hear her moaning behind a curtain, beating her head on concrete.
Sinjar fell in 2014. This was a year before Shamima Begum went to join ISIS. She knew full well about the fate of Yazidi girls younger than her, because her recruiter boasted about it, and laughed about their suffering. Yazidi slaves were part of the Caliphate's marketing.

And he's bang on there. The tendency to view female Isis members as victims when little nuance is afforded to their male counterparts is sexist, dangerous and frankly, stupid
