President Trump spent years viciously bashing CNN, and his supporters have been arrested for calling in death threats and sending bombs.

And CNN's response is to put a former member of his administration in charge of their politics coverage?

Hell of an incentive structure.
A reminder: There is literally nothing any news outlet can do to avoid the president attacking them as the "enemy of the people," short of going full Hannity.

The attack is made in bad faith, and that is what it takes to avoid it.
Putting Corey Lewandowski on the CNN payroll *while he was still on the Trump payroll* didn't do it. Neither did loading up with pro-Trump commentators. Neither did firing reporters who published stories that fell apart.
If CNN isn't doing this to make Trump be nicer to them, they're doing it because they really think the person best suited to help guide the network's politics coverage should have no experience in journalism whatsoever.
