When I was looking for an entry point into science communication, it was a struggle to find paid internships. So in 2017, I compiled a list to help out future #scicommjob hunters. I get asked a lot to update it, so here is my update thread for 2019!

First of all, if you feel your financial situation is still limiting you, apply for @ScienceWriters's Diversity Fellowship. 3 applicants from underrepresented groups will receive a $5000 fellowship to supplement any internship stipends.

1/ I teach journalism at University of New Hampshire, and one of the things we discuss is how—while many newsworthy stories are bounded in time, audience, relevance, and the expertise needed to cover them—others are far more expansive and require a different kind of journalism.
2/ Earlier this week, I gave a lecture at The Pratt Institute titled "The Trump-Russia Affair As Generational Event." It framed the Affair as a historical episode rather than a bounded news story—more analagous to the Great Depression than a single federal criminal investigation.

High level #python #tutorial thread:
Python is a high level language that runs bytecode in its virtual machine.
Everything is an object.
It supports OOP up to multiple inheritance and functional programming.
Typing is polymorphic - duck typing is preferred
A Python script is a file with a name like name.py - we indent at four spaces (it matters), comments (after #) don't execute - and is typically written like:

def main(): # function
print("Hello world")

if __name__ == '__main__': # then entry point
main()
A module is a reusable script:

"""this is a docstring at the top of the module - gives help on the module"""

import this # do imports at the top

def main(): # main at top or bottom
"""functions get docstrings too"""
