This seems like an entirely logical consequence of an entire generation raised to believe humanity is a virus that is destroying the Earth. Overpopulation, global warming, socialism, abortion ideology - all of it driven by the notion of humanity as a disease.
There was plenty of dystopian sci-fi in the glum pre-"Star Wars" 60s and 70s, but it always viewed the apocalypse as a horror to be avoided, not a fate we deserved.
I wonder how many high-school and college kids today would view the setting of "Logan's Run" as a somewhat reasonable response to limited resources, overpopulation, environmental degradation, and the quest to separate sex from biology and its consequences.
