It’s underdiscussed how contingent this new assessment of Russia as our biggest swashbuckling foe is on parts of the Republican Party and European parties on the right adopting pro-Russian views, for whatever reason, in the years since Romney’s campaign.
If McConnell, Ryan, Nunes, Burr, Rohrabacher and Trump stood shoulder to shoulder with Democrats before and after 2016 saying whatever our partisan differences we won’t abide a Russian attack on American democracy and we’re going to investigate and punish anyone responsible...
If the US and the whole EU were united in opposing Russian territorial aggression in Ukraine and responsibly dealing w a refugee crisis out of Syria (rather than fracturing because of it), would Russia look as big and bad as the US’s other strategic competitors?
If Obama and the US fp community missed Russia’s ascendency, it’s at least in part because they thought highly enough of western right-wing politicians that they didn’t expect them to open the door for Putin’s ambitions. Good on Romney for predicting it, though, I suppose.
