We knew America had tested the limits of its moral boundaries, and failed, when it accepted the murders of 5 year olds in their classroom as something they could do morning about. I feel exactly the same way about the Pell apologists.
Abbott. Howard. Brennan. Devine. Bolt. & the rest. Now we see them unequivocally for who they are (as if we did not know). There should be no coming back for any of them from this precipice of moral bastardry. It will be our reckoning as a nation as to whether or not we let them.
Richter, of course, also sits on this list. I don’t care that it’s his job to defend the indefensible. It’s how he chose to do so that condemns him utterly.
And here’s the irony: all these apologists are champions of the patriarchy. They deny the existence of toxic masculinity. So surely, by their own standards, a man who has failed to fulfil the core function of the patriarch–to protect women and children–
A man who has indeed fundamentally betrayed the very tenets of the masculinity they claim as the natural order, ought to be the lowest of the low. Ought to be outcast, their existence untenable to their sense of social order. And yet here we are.
They deny, they excuse, they do not suffer the little children to come and tell their truth. In other words, their own claim to moral certainty and their unshaking belief in the right way of things has been revealed to be the self-serving sham we always knew it was.
They must be shunned. They must never again be given any kind of platform to spew their narcissistic hate and bigotry. The apologist for the child rapist is on the same rung of turpitude and we must not forget and we must not forgive.
