Now that we're talking about Rudy Giuliani pal Robert J. Costello, I'd note that he is the same NYC FBI/SDNY-connected Robert J. Costello referred to in this case (excerpt below), decided just a few months ago: Bergrin v. Kelner, 2018 NY Slip Op 51721 (law.justia.com/cases/new-york…).
1/ Given that Costello was Criminal Division chief at SDNY, it sounds like (if this pleading is true) he was drawing from his SDNY affiliation here. I wonder if he drew on his FBI pals in NYC in October '16 when Rudy Giuliani wanted info from them? Who knows—but I'd love to know.
2/ Here's Costello defending the appointment (as overseer of Trump cases in SDNY) a man who donated to Trump's campaign and was Giuliani's law partner, underscoring Costello's attitude toward the latter two men and conflicts of interest in their perimeter. talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/white-house…

1/ By the way—and I'm being serious here—you shouldn't doubt for a *moment* that Iran policy *was* discussed at that meeting at Trump Tower, as Iran policy is at the *heart* of the larger conspiracy Prince, Trump Jr, Zamel, and (Mueller cooperator) Nader were discussing that day.
2/ It's just that it wasn't the *only* thing discussed. Also discussed was Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates illegally giving Trump collusive pre-election assistance—an offer which Donald Trump Jr. said "yes" to that day, and which we have *proof* was acted upon.

While I remain optimistic that Judge Jackson will next week give Paul Manafort a hefty consecutive sentence (up to 10 years), the reality is that Judge Ellis issued a *substantial* downward adjustment from the sentencing guidelines today, and gave no reason at *all* for doing so.
1/ In fact, Judge Ellis said that he was "surprised" that Manafort expressed "no remorse" for his crimes, which would've normally led court watchers to conclude Ellis would stick with the sentencing guidelines. So it does seem Ellis was sending a message here—but not to Manafort.
2/ One message Ellis has been sending for years is that he doesn't consider white-collar crimes—usually committed by rich white men—to be particularly serious. He *also* isn't happy that Mueller hasn't shown his cards yet—even though that's just Mueller doing his job responsibly.

So @RepSpeier has it exactly right—the way most people took Cohen's Congressional testimony, he said before Congress that, in all his face-to-face contacts with Trump, he never asked him (directly) for a pardon. The report we have now is that his lawyers looked into it with Rudy.
1/ What everyone agrees is that Michael Cohen had sufficient "direct" access to Trump that he could have asked him *directly* for a pardon, and that if he said he didn't do that, it may well be true given how many questions from Congress he willingly answered on this exact issue.
2/ Just as the media is trying to create a "Dems in chaos" narrative—regarding Rep. Omar—that's more or less farcical, the media is trying to create a "Cohen perjured himself" narrative that's not going to turn out the way folks think *because* of how Cohen phrased his testimony.
